WEIGHT LIMIT FOR MOTOR VEHICLES AND TRAILERS IN IRELAND

The Irish National Roads Authority (NRA) required a study to be carried out to investigate the increase in the allowable Gross Vehicle Weights (GVWs) of 6 axle trucks from the current legal limit of 44t to 46t.This project investigated the impact of the proposed increase in GVW on bridges in the Irish road infrastructure. A range of bridge lengths and influence lines were considered that accurately described the bridge population in Ireland. Detailed simulations were carried out using real traffic from European Weigh in Motion (WIM) data with the proposed change in legal weight of 6 axle trucks compared to the current situation.
